My boyfriend was holding me down in his sleep. This has never happened before.?
My boyfriend is in the Navy and is now taking a class where he had to get sprayed in the eyes with O.C. (mace) and go through several different "stations" where he had to beat up and take people down. Well, two days after he went through this course with mace in his eyes, we stayed at his mom’s house. We were in a room that was very claustrophobic, hot, and stuffy. I was laying on my side and he had his arm over me and I went to turn on my back and he suddenly sat up and tried to hold me down. At first I thought he wanted rough sex, so I put my face really close to his to kiss him, and that’s when I realized he was asleep, because he didn’t respond and he was all wobbly like his motor skills weren’t all there. I couldn’t see his face because it was so dark, only his silhouette. Half asleep myself, I laid him back down, because it was sort of a weak fight and woke him up. I said "You were trying to hold me down in your sleep" and he said "Huh? Oh….sorry." and went right back to sleep. A little while later he DID IT AGAIN! Only with more force. I tried to push him off, but I couldn’t, so I started barking his name and then he calmed down and laid back down. I woke him up and I said "I’m sleeping in the other room" and he was sad, but didn’t really wake all the way up. So, I left for a while and I couldn’t sleep without him so I went back into the room and woke him all the way up and I was horrified and crying and he had no recollection of what he’d done. He felt horrible and kept apologizing and then refused to sleep afterward because he didn’t want to do it again. It hasn’t happened since (It’s been a week), but I’m still afraid it’s going to. Should I tie him down, take all sharp objects away from the bedstands, sleep in separate rooms? I’ve been reading about REM parasomnia. I’m wondering if either the claustrophobic room or maybe his Navy class brought this on and that it’s a one time occurrence. Has anyone had this happen before? Does anyone have any legit advice?
both brought it on. be careful and take all sharp objects out of rooms you sleep in

That must have been a horrifying experience for you. I feel it must be a reaction to the course he went through. That sounds pretty traumatic and stressful. Hopefully, after a bit, he will be able to relax. If it happens again and you feel that he may harm you, then he needs to take responsibility. He should see the base doctor and discuss the issue. The solution may be as simple as learning and practicing some stress-relieving mental exercises before bed.
